The Ohio Ginseng Growers Consortium is a selective network of woodland ginseng growers across Ohio, coordinated through Ohio Ginseng LLC. The Consortium exists to establish serious, long-term ginseng production while restoring and stewarding native habitat.
Membership is open to landowners with suitable shaded woodland in Ohio.
Consortium growers purchase American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) seed directly from Ohio Ginseng LLC. Membership requires a 10 lb minimum initial purchase (roughly 65,000–80,000 seeds). This ensures members are serious about long-term production and restoration.
Growers are also able to purchase 1-3 year old roots to get a head start.
Ohio Ginseng LLC provides site-selection guidance, training, and ongoing expertise to help growers establish successful wild-simulated stands.
Ginseng becomes legally harvestable at 4–5 years, when plants begin producing seed and self-propagating. However, roots increase dramatically in both size and market value with age — 8+ year-old roots can command 2–3x higher prices than 5-year-old roots.
Growers may sell roots directly to approved buyers, into export channels, or work with Ohio Ginseng LLC as a centralized broker to access premium markets.
High-value crop: Ginseng is among the most profitable non-timber forest products in North America, with older roots commanding premium international prices.
Regenerative investment: Once plants reach maturity, they self-seed and spread naturally, creating a compounding long-term yield.
Land productivity: Woodland undergrowth that otherwise has little commercial use can be converted into a generational income source.
Ownership and independence: Growers retain full control of their land and plants — no contracts.
Conservation impact: Members contribute to the restoration of Ohio’s native ginseng populations while generating real profit.
